Im Jahre 1988 machte ich mich auf, Tofino auf Vancouver Island B.C. zu erkunden. Ein alter Freund Alfred Gutmann aus Börnsen hatte hier seine neue Heimat gefunden. Tofino gehört zum Clayoquot Sound, das ist der Name des zerklüfteten Küstengebietes im Westen der Insel mit etwa 2700 km². Von der Esowista-Halbinsel am Barkley Sound im Süden bis zur Hesquiaht-Halbinsel am Nootka Sound im Norden ist wildes und wunderschönes Indianerland. Gemäßigter Regenwald, Flussläufe, Seen und Stränden, ein echtes Naturparadis. In den 1990er war die Gegend ein Brennpunkt der internationalen Naturschutzbewegung als Symbol für den Konflikt zwischen Naturschutz und Forstwirtschaft, welche mit sogenannten "Clearcuts" alles zerstörten. Allen Firmen voran McMillian Bloedel, welche illegale Forstwege baute. Bis heute ist das alles nicht entgültig geklärt!

Laut Wikipedia: "Das Wort Clayoquot ist die englische Umschreibung der Selbstbezeichnung des ortsansässigen Indianervolkes der Tla-o-qui-aht. Bis 1861 hieß der Sund Wickaninnish Sound nach deren Häuptling Wickaninnish und war 1787 vom englischen Kapitän Charles Barkley so benannt worden".
